Just had a student in my office, crying because she has to fly home where her brother is in the hospital. Hospitalized because he was beaten up pretty badly, probably because he is gay. All I could do was give her a hug and some tissue and reassure her that I'll make certain her astronomy class won't be an additional area of stress.
Doesn't feel like enough.

We could go beat up the guys who beat up her brother....
Beating up seems so...primitive. Two wrongs don't make a right, after all. I say we should just take them out of the gene pool altogether using massive artillery and, possibly, incendiary devices. Much more civilized, and a better result!
At least the kid who got beat up has a family who loves and supports him.
It's not much, but it's something...
It's also nice to see how many people here are supporting him. Makes me feel a little better. Thanks, all!
